Mount Putuo is situated on Putuo Island in Zhejiang Province, China, approximately 130 kilometers southeast of Ningbo, a coastal city. The travel distance can vary slightly depending on the specific starting point in Ningbo and the mode of transportation used to reach Mount Putuo.

Ningbo to Mt.Putuo (普陀山) by public transport in 2024

The easiest way to reach Mt.Putuo is to go to the South Bus station (宁波汽南站) in Ningbo.

Several daily buses go directly to the ferry terminal in the Wugongshi Wharf (朱家尖蜈蚣峙码头). The bus usually leaves Ningbo every hour. It is a two-hour drive to the pier. The bus ticket costs 72 CNY.

From the ferry terminal take a ferry that will lead you to the island of Mt.Putuo. The ferry costs 30 CNY and leaves frequently – every half an hour or so. There are also more expensive speed boats that leave every 10 minutes.

Upon arrival at Putuo Island, disembark from the ferry and follow signs to the main tourist area, where you’ll find hotels, restaurants, and transportation options to explore the island.

Entrance Fee for Putuo Mountain Scenic Area is 150 CNY. This fee typically includes access to various temples, shrines, and natural scenery within the scenic area.

There are additional fees for certain temples, cultural sites, and activities within Mount Putuo. Keep in mind that Puji Temple, Fayu Temple, and Huiji Temple have a separate entrance of only 5 to 7 CNY but it has to be paid cash!

If you choose to take the cable car to reach the mountaintop or to access specific viewing platforms, there will be an additional fee for the cable car ride.

Keep in mind that the last bus back to the city is at 4:30 pm.

By the way, you can get to other cities as well, not only back to Ningbo!

But even if you get stuck on the island longer, there are plenty of private cars that offer the ride back to Ningbo. If you’re traveling with someone you may consider taking such an option as they offer the same price as the bus if shared.
